Austria Sees a Decade’s Lowest Number of Asylum Requests in July

AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – In Austria, July 2026 marked the lowest monthly count of first-time asylum applications in ten years, with only 244 submissions recorded. This represents an approximate 65% drop from the 697 applications filed in July 2025, according to Austria’s Interior Ministry. When including both initial and subsequent applications, the total number of asylum filings reached 840 for the month. These latest figures continue a notable downward trend in Austria’s asylum demand during the first seven months of 2026.

Austria asylum applications fall to decade low in July
Austria reported 244 first-time asylum claims in July, the lowest monthly level in a decade.

Between January and July, Austria saw a total of 5,743 asylum applications, a significant decrease from the 10,442 applications during the same period in 2025. This constitutes roughly a 45% decline compared to the previous year. The total count encompasses various types of applications, whereas the July figure of 244 pertains exclusively to new first-time claims. Austrian authorities publish monthly asylum statistics that distinguish these categories to better illustrate new applications versus repeat filings.

Syrian nationals submitted 267 asylum requests in July, making them the largest nationality group for the month. The ministry noted that most of these Syrian applications involved children born in Austria, rather than newly arrived migrants. Austria continues to implement restrictions on family reunification in certain asylum cases. So far in 2026, authorities have recorded 60 related entries, compared to 853 during the same period in 2025.

Decrease in Returns and Border Detentions

During the first seven months of 2026, Austria reported more departures than new first-time asylum claims. By the end of July, 8,856 individuals had left the country, either voluntarily or through enforced removals. Of this total, 4,615 were removals, and 4,241 were voluntary departures. The authorities also executed 392 transfers under the EU’s Dublin regulation, which assigns responsibility for processing certain asylum requests within participating European nations.

Border apprehensions in Burgenland, in eastern Austria, have also declined compared to previous years. From January to mid-August 2026, authorities recorded 339 apprehensions, a sharp decrease from nearly 16,000 over the same period in 2023. The Interior Ministry attributes this reduction to enhanced enforcement and cooperation measures with neighboring Hungary. Austrian police have also been involved in Operation Fox, a joint effort targeting migrant smuggling and irregular border crossings.

Asylum Application Numbers Continue to Drop in 2026

The July figures follow a trend of decreasing asylum requests throughout the first half of 2026. During that six-month span, Austria received approximately 5,000 asylum applications, with departures surpassing incoming claims. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner has presented these numbers as part of the government’s latest migration overview. Austria has also maintained voluntary return initiatives for Syrians, with 240 Syrian nationals leaving the country in July, according to official data.

The recent statistics clearly indicate a year-on-year decline in both initial applications and overall asylum filings. The 244 first-time claims in July set a new decade low for the government figures, while the total monthly number reached 840. The total from January to July, 5,743 applications, remains significantly below the 2025 figures. Austrian authorities categorize these figures as part of ongoing reports on asylum and migration, providing detailed data on applications, departures, transfers, and border apprehensions.
