BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Euro area annual inflation increased to an estimated 3.3% in August 2026, up from 2.9% in July. The month experienced a notable surge in energy prices. Eurostat released the preliminary estimate on Sept. 1. Previously, the inflation rate was 2.8% in June and 2.0% in August 2025. Consumer prices grew by 0.4% from July, according to the harmonised index of consumer prices.

Euro area inflation reaches 3.3% on August energy gains
Euro area inflation rose to 3.3% in August as energy prices recorded the strongest increase.

Energy registered the highest annual growth among the main categories at 14.3%, rising from 10.3% in July. Additionally, energy prices increased by 2.9% during the month. Services inflation slowed to 3.0% from 3.3% in July. The inflation rate for non-energy industrial goods edged up to 1.2% from 0.9%. Food, alcohol, and tobacco inflation held steady at 1.2%, unchanged from the previous month.

Adjustments that exclude certain categories indicated smaller fluctuations in August. Inflation excluding energy remained at 2.2%, consistent with July. The rate excluding energy, food, alcohol, and tobacco eased slightly to 2.4% from 2.5%. Inflation excluding energy and unprocessed food dropped to 2.1% from 2.2%. These measures track consumer price shifts after specific components are removed from the overall inflation calculation.

Energy inflation accelerates while services inflation declines

Across the euro area’s 21 member states, inflation in August showed considerable variation. Lithuania recorded the highest estimate at 5.8%, with Cyprus at 5.2% and Bulgaria at 5.1%. Spain experienced 4.5%, Belgium 4.2%, and Luxembourg 4.0%. On the lower end, Estonia was at 1.3%, Malta at 1.9%, and Finland at 2.4%. Germany registered 2.9%, France 2.7%, and Italy 3.2%.

Monthly price fluctuations also differed across nations. Belgium saw a 2.1% increase, Luxembourg 1.8%, and Cyprus 1.5%. France and Bulgaria each experienced 0.8% rises from July. Ireland, Spain, and Malta each recorded 0.6% increases. Finland’s monthly change was a decrease of 0.4%, while Slovakia showed no change. Germany’s prices rose by 0.2%, and Italy’s by 0.1%.

The euro area now includes 21 member countries

Bulgaria joined the euro zone on Jan. 1, 2026, expanding the currency bloc to 21 countries. Data through December 2025 reflect the previous composition of 20 member states. From January 2026 onward, figures account for the larger group. The European Union statistical framework employs a chain-index approach when the euro area’s membership changes. As a result, the August preliminary estimate captures the current 21-member configuration.

The August data remains a flash estimate, with comprehensive harmonised consumer-price data scheduled for release on Sept. 17, 2026. The subsequent flash estimate for September inflation will be published on Oct. 2. The index measures shifts in prices paid by households for goods and services. Annual inflation compares prices with those of the same month in the previous year, while monthly inflation assesses changes from the previous month.
