London / Euro Wire/ – In Europe, a new scientific review attributes the ongoing extreme drought to human activity, emphasizing that climate change is worsening the region’s water scarcity issues. The study highlights how unprecedented heat levels are the primary force behind these conditions, surpassing the influence of seasonal rainfall deficits, and is based on findings from a global coalition of climate experts. The data reveals that rising global temperatures significantly speed up the evaporation of moisture from land and water bodies, resulting in a highly unstable and arid environment. Despite spring bringing below-average rainfall, it was the temperature surges driven by climate change that pushed the situation into a critical drought phase, especially after a historic June heatwave that left European rivers depleted, water restrictions in place, and wildfires raging.

The study published by the World Weather Attribution group details how increasing temperatures actively drain natural water sources. Mariam Zachariah, an researcher at Imperial College London, pointed out that drought is not primarily caused by low rainfall but by a warmer atmosphere that causes greater moisture deficits on land. This means that even in areas where rainfall remains steady, drought risk will keep rising. Scientists explain that for each 1°C increase in temperature, the atmosphere’s capacity to hold water vapor grows by approximately seven percent. This heightened capacity directly results in more intense evaporation from soils and vegetation across broad regions.
Utilizing extensive climate data and sophisticated modeling, researchers compared the current hotter climate to a scenario 1.4°C cooler to assess changing probabilities of such weather events. Their results indicate that soils in western Europe are now five times more likely to be extremely dry than in a world without human-induced warming. In eastern Europe, similar soil moisture deficits are 11 times more probable. The analysis also shows that the likelihood of observing very high evaporative demand between April and June in western Europe has increased about 80 times. These shifts mean that rainfall shortages which previously wouldn’t trigger severe drought now lead to significantly drier soils.
Calls for Immediate Global Emissions Reduction
Dominik Schumacher from ETH Zurich pointed out that the tendency for unusual soil drying has already been apparent in spring before the onset of summer. He explained that as temperatures rise, the atmosphere’s thirst intensifies, rapidly extracting moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soils. The combination of a relatively moist start to the year followed by extreme heat created ideal conditions for extensive wildfires. The swift drying process prepared the landscape for ignition, leading to severe fires across multiple nations. The findings confirm that climate change-driven droughts in Europe are transforming traditional weather patterns into increasingly dangerous cycles.
The agricultural industry is experiencing unprecedented pressure from widespread soil moisture loss. The drought has severely impacted farming communities, causing historic crop failures across several countries. France is now expected to have its lowest maize harvest in five decades, signaling a significant disruption to local food supplies. Similarly, Romania has lost more than one million hectares of maize, further threatening the stability of the regional agricultural supply chain. These domestic shortfalls, coupled with ongoing global conflicts, threaten to elevate food prices and disproportionately affect low-income populations.
Projected Warming Trends and Future Risks
The ongoing hydrological impacts are worsening the economic damages, with critically low river levels disrupting essential transport routes. Major shipping routes on key waterways are experiencing increased interruptions, underscoring the severity of the continent’s water crisis. Reduced flow in major rivers directly threatens hydropower generation in regions heavily reliant on consistent water supplies. Recent data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed that June was the hottest on record in western Europe. In response, many countries have started implementing emergency restrictions or temporary bans on non-essential water use to conserve limited resources.
Scientists warn that if global temperatures continue to climb, droughts like these may become even more frequent. They emphasize that these extreme evaporation conditions are already happening at 1.4°C of warming, indicating immediate dangers associated with current emission levels. If emissions push global temperatures up to 2.8°C as projected, the likelihood of such evaporative conditions could double. Without urgent and aggressive action to reduce emissions, experts caution that Europe faces a future of endless hot, dry summers, with persistent droughts becoming the new norm.
